About Keya Thumar

I’m a biotechnology professional with a strong foundation in molecular biology, sequencing analysis, and microbial systems, driven by a passion for scientific innovation and meaningful problem-solving in the life sciences. I hold a Master’s in Biotechnology from Penn State and a Bachelor’s in Biological Science & Psychology from UIC (Dean’s List), bringing a cross-functional lens to research and development. At Syngenta, I support the development of CRISPR/Cas9 and cisgenesis trait pipelines, validate gene edits, design PCR assays, and facilitate high-throughput sequencing workflows. I contribute to data-driven decisions across cross-functional R&D teams using advanced molecular techniques and bioinformatics tools. My graduate research at the Couradeau Lab focused on microbial community dynamics in agricultural soils and biological soil crusts, utilizing qPCR, carbon and nitrogen analysis, and DNA-based techniques. I also trained peers in GLP-compliant sample processing and lab operations. Earlier, at the Salles Lab, I explored bioacoustic behavior in bats and social structures in mole rats, showcasing my ability to integrate biology, technology, and behavioral science. Currently upskilling in project management with MIT xPRO, Coursera, and PMI (CAPM exam scheduled), I’m expanding into scientific project coordination and strategic operations within biotech, excited to bridge lab science with leadership and innovation.
