About Keyonna King

Dr. King has worked closely with her mentor, Dr. Susanne Montgomery, to develop her skill in mixed methods research designs and has extensive experience utilizing the community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach in African American and Latino communities. Dr. King focuses her research efforts on improving health outcomes for African Americans in the context of CBPR. She was a senior research associate at UCLA's Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) within the Community Engagement and Research Program (CERP). There, she worked to achieve the aims of CERP by co-coordinating various community-partnered participatory research (CPPR)/CBPR studies. She was also the project manager for FRIENDS Text, a study focusing on older African American women with uncontrolled diabetes led by Dr. Arleen Brown through UCLA's BRITE Center (Bridging Research, Innovation, Training, and Education on Minority Health Disparities Solutions). Currently, Dr. King is an associate professor at UNMC College of Public Health in the Department of Health Promotion. She works within the Center for Reducing Health Disparities leading the team located at the North Omaha satellite office to focus on developing, implementing, and evaluating community-engaged and community-driven research projects and service activities. She is also the Director of the Community Engagement & Outreach core of the Great Plains IDeA Clinical and Translational Research Network at UNMC. She is one of the first recipients of the prestigious Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship. As an alum for the Bill & Melinda Gates scholarship, she gives back by mentoring underrepresented minority undergraduate and graduate students teaching them about research, applying CBPR, and conducting community-engaged research.
