Background
About Khalad Karram
Through my past experience of studying molecular cell biology, neurobiology, neuroimmunology, I have attained a comprehensive up to date knowledge of neurodegenerative / neuroimmunological disorders. This intensive background has enlightened me in other areas of human disease, with a strong focus on MS and autoimmune diseases. At the present time, I am doing research on the NG2 (Nerve Glia antigen 2) protein and its role in multiple sclerosis and psoriasis, at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) under the supervision of Prof. Ari Waisman. IMM’s main focus is to better understand the role of the immune system in various immune disorders (e.g. MS and psoriasis) and tumor suppressor genes. We are also collaborating with PHENEX GMBH to develop new immunotherapy drugs. In the last year, I have taken on the responsibility for maintaining and coordinating the Biomedicine masters program at the University of Mainz. My strong oral communication and negotiating skills proved that I was well qualified for such a position. As a core member of IMM I maintain hardware and software and it is my responsibility to teach new people in the lab.I finished my doctor thesis at the University of Mainz, under Prof. Jacqueline Trotter in the Molecular Cell Biology Department and I also worked there as a postdoc supervising and guiding students and technical assistants. I have a comprehensive background in LSM imaging, 2D/3D reconstruction using Image J program and FACS sorting. I finished my bachelor of science in biology in the United States, where I received an award fellowship for research at the National Institute of Health (NIH). In the following years I helped build up stem cell/tumor cell labs in the United States at NIH and in Germany under the supervision of Prof. Ronald McKay and Prof. Dr. Oliver Brüstle (Life and Brain) respectively.
