About Kim Marsh

My undergraduate photographic practice was in photography, completing my degree and then gaining honours. This was studio practice, large format camera work, and darkroom technique. I began my photography career photographing bands, and occasionally still do. The photographic practice grew to include all types of freelance work, book editorial images, and social media campaigns. My core practice is in contemporary art using the medium of photography and other media to create meaning and discuss ideas. I investigated theory in a number of discourse papers during my study on the BDes in Wellington, and have continued to develop an academic pursuit. Some of my work is in installation and sculpture. My creative strengths are: contemporary art, darkroom techniques, studio photography installation, and sculptural practice. I was a finalist in the National Contemporary Art Award Finalist: 2003, 2004, 2005 with my large format minimalist studio works. My honours project 'The White Dress' was exhibited at the Waikato Museum show Honours 02, and spent the rest of its life in the Media Arts department. In 2008 this was exhibited at the Hastings City Art Gallery in Te Kāhui Maunga Kura Toi, an exhibition which brought together the founding Toi practitioners, current students, graduates and managers of arts in a large show promoted nationally in media and television. After art school I taught part time, and was with the Vavasour Godkin Gallery in High Street, Auckland. In 2006 I began working in tertiary education management for Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. The skills and strengths I have gained in my role with TWoA are in strategic management, creative development, budgeting, planning, curriculum, writing, creative and academic writing, staff management, teaching, research development, high level consultancy and facilitation, relationship management, programme development, resource creation and development and teaching. Over the last 5 years I have been active in social justice. Currently I am a board of governance trustee on the Tauranga Moana Restorative Justice Trust. I also run a Books for Prisons project, gathering and replenishing prison libraries with books to increase the amount of cultural material available to prisoners. I hold strongly compassionate and fair beliefs which are active in my teaching practice, and the way I interact with people. My aim is always to be a good treaty partner, and to engage with all people in a positive way As a mature practitioner I am able to support and develop all students with their creative projects.
