Background
About Kim Nichols
Curiosity, active listening, and empathy are my superpowers, which grant me a mindset that drives me to create work and learning environments where students and employees can truly thrive. My academic journey began at UNC School of Medicine, where I chose anesthesiology for its unique blend of anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, and clinical reasoning. After working in private practice, I returned to academia, bringing valuable insights about human connection that continue to shape my approach. My passion for education emerged during my Chief Resident role for Medical Student Education. From mentoring residents and fellows to guiding medical students, I've found immense joy in watching learners develop and helping them navigate their career paths. This led me to roles in academic advising and curricular management, working across North Carolina to support students, staff, and faculty. In 2019, I discovered relational leadership principles of curiosity, psychological safety, and storytelling—concepts I quickly integrated into my patient care, teaching, and leadership approach. As Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education from fall 2022 to July 2025, I employed transformational and servant leadership to empower teams and foster innovation. My responsibilities included managing a multi-million-dollar budget, cultivating statewide clinical partnerships, and overseeing the Offices of Admissions, Curricular Affairs, and Student Affairs. My MBA studies reinforced a crucial insight: employees who feel recognized for their skills experience higher career satisfaction, directly benefiting organizational health. Throughout my leadership roles, I've become passionate about discovering and developing leadership potential in others; over time, I have learned to use a Leader as Coach mindset to empower individuals and teams to be creative and drive change when necessary. In short, I am first and foremost a person—but also a physician, educator, mentor, and relational leader committed to creating spaces where everyone can grow and succeed. My ongoing mission is to work with people who share this dedication to personal and professional development.
