About Kim Olsen

I'm a writer and editor with 15 combined years of editorial and freelance experience, and the author of Your Wedding, Your Way: Destination Elopements, Courthouse Ceremonies, and Other Nontraditional Nuptials (Chronicle Books, February 2022), which argues for the downsizing of the wedding industry and offers ways that couples can elope or go small. Press coverage and/or appearances include Well+Good, NBC, the New York Post, VIP Alexandria Magazine, and "The Wedding Dish" podcast. In 2019, while working on my book proposal, I began building the legs of a related website, Art of Eloping, which launched in 2020. It offers rich destination guides, straightforward advice, planning tools, and real couples' stories for those who are planning an elopement. From 2016-2018, I was an editor and fact-checker at Washingtonian magazine, where I was able to flex my passion for narrative nonfiction writing while delving into the world of service journalism and all its listicle glory. Freelance writing has offered the luxury of nurturing some of my deep interests, my favorite being a profile of right winger Tom Wilson for the 2019-20 Washington Capitals W Magazine (although I root for the Pittsburgh Penguins). My work has also appeared in Runner’s World, Pittsburgh Magazine, and Pittsburgh City Paper, and I currently blog for ALX Community, a hyper-local coworking startup in Alexandria, Virginia, on all things #howwework. I spend my time away from my laptop taking long walks and listening to "How I Built This," expanding my repertoire of vegetarian casserole recipes, and reading everything Jia Tolentino writes. And, traveling! Next up: Germany.
