Background
About Kinda Ibrahim
I am a Pharmacist and Senior lecturer working in Academic Geriatric Medicine at the University of Southampton. I am also a key member of the NIHR Wessex Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) working mainly within the Ageing and Dementia Theme but also in the long-term conditions theme.I have significant experience in Applied Health Research focusing on ageing and frailty. My current research interest is on Medicines Optimisation and Deprescribing among older patients living with frailty who are exposed to inappropriate polypharmacy. I am a key member of the Northern European Research in Deprescribing network steering committee, the joint AHSN/ARC Wessex Medicine Optimisation network and the European Geriatric Medicine Society Polypharmacy Special Interest Group which bring together national and international researchers interested in deprescribing. My research is also directed to improving the care provided to older people with a focus on identifying and managing frailty and sarcopenia (weak muscle strength and mass) in clinical practice. I have specific interest in workforce development by training staff and developing their skills, capacity and confidence. I have developed and delivered theory driven training programmes to NHS staff looking after older people in hospital. I have a significant expertise in implementation science with a focus on evaluating the implementation of guidelines and evidence-based research into clinical practice and investigating barriers and facilitators for implementation. I have led a number of implementation studies such as the assessment of frailty and sarcopenia among older people with fragility fractures sponsored by the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) program and the GRImP study funded by the NIHR Wessex CLAHRC which evaluated the feasibility of implementing grip strength measurement by nursing staff in their routine clinical practice when looking after older hospitalised people. The GRImP study protocol and procedures has become a guidance and blue-print for other research groups that implemented grip strength measurement in different settings and using different healthcare professionals.I have specific expertise in qualitative methodology and currently lead an international Qualitative network supported by the Wessex ARC including over 170 members from multidisciplinary backgrounds (Medicine, Health Sciences, Medical Sociology, Social Science, Psychology)
