About Kirk Hodgson

Kirk is passionate about Innovation and design. Simply reiterating design that has been done over and over again in relatively the same fashion is not enough. Innovation is one key to the progress of our human race and this always requires design. Therefore his jam is when the two are combined. While most of his career has been spent in Architecture, over the last many years, he has diversified into related Green Technologies, bio-based innovation, software and manufacturing. He is an advocate of designing and constructing buildings with lower embodied carbon and that operate with few GHG emissions. His interest also lies in the importance of wisely renovating our existing building stock. He believes the AEC world needs significant change and he is especially interested in how technologies can help make these changes, faster. His belief and mission is that all humans should live, work, learn and play in healthy buildings. It’s not just that every person should have a home, but to have a healthy home, truly healthy. In fact all buildings can be designed and built to actually increase the health of its users, not reduce it. Biophilia with advanced design and building technologies are of critical importance. He has had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects since 2002 including work in the public, educational, industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. With his broad spectrum of experience, he understands the challenges and rewards of designing, developing and delivering successful projects. He has been part of Design and Technology teams that have worked on large projects notable in Canadian Architecture, including the UBC Library, named the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, and the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion among others. His experience includes mid-size and smaller projects that has further taught him the value of collaboration with a variety of people with different skill sets and backgrounds. One of his strengths is to keep an eye on the “big picture” and at the same time never lose the ability to focus in on all the small details that bring a project’s vision to reality. That jump back and forth between the Macro and Micro, and the things between, has been especially rewarding for him. He has a love for being in nature, human psychology and of the Arts. The picture on the top of this profile page is one of which he took of the Marmot and Terminal Mountains near Jasper, Alberta. These mountains are a constant reminder of how beautiful our shared planet is, but also that we all have to take better care of our home.
