About Kris McGrath

In the early part of my career I was pleased to offer deskside support to many Faculty and Staff at the University of New Brunswick. I learned a tremendous amount about how technology impacts the day-to-day operations of a non-technical environment. As the institution evolved, so did I and I had the pleasure of working with many amazing students whos use of technology served the betterment of the humanities. For nearly 20 year I worked as the technology person who helped the non-technical person perform their work better by making the right tools available to them. In my more recent work I've learned that the only thing more boring to people than understanding the technicalities of IT, is understanding the PROCESS behind the technicalities of IT work! As an Access Management specialist my duties include logical security models that are derived from contractual obligations. Implementing deskside procedures for delivery teams that are as robust as possible, and still transparent enough to surivive the scrutiny of legal and technical auditors. I'm no longer the person standing in the classroom making things work for once class. Instead, I'm behind the scenes- protecting people from databreaches and service outages. I spend most of my time looking for problems so we can find solutions before we have problems. The world of IT Security isn't glamourous, nor exciting, but when we do our jobs right, then the data that represents an individual's life is safe and protected from the malicious actor, and the neglected access in equal measure.
