I started as a Nursing assistant to now working as Neonatal ICU nurse has been a constant progressive journey from just knowing basic nursing skills to advanced practised skills from taking vital signs, inserting IV lines, bedding, oral and eye care, sponging and taking vitals to assisting in complex medical procedures with great precision in limited amount of time, handling emergencies from basic life support to Advanced life support. Having trained in Facility based newborn care(FBNC) can perform various complex tasks such as care of newborn at birth, being able to distinguish between a sick and a healthy newborn, assisting in infant CPR, umblical/arterial vein catheterization, endotracheal intubation, dose calculations and dilutions, administering IV drugs, naso-gastric/oro-gastric feeding, assisting the infant in spoon/breastfeeding, able to identify danger signs and can help with triage of such infants. Having GALPAC skills to observe, listen to, ask and guide/counsel parents and relatives of the infant regarding taking care of newborn during and after hospital stay. Precise documentation and proper consent kept as hospital/department record helps during any issues/complications. knowing proper usage and discard/disinfection of procedure articles and their post procedure care. Counseling on admission, discharge and death of an infant to the parents takes a lot of effort and patience to be able to understand their condition and console them for their worries. Nursing is a profession where you care about patient's both physical and emotional needs. Moreover, being a Neonatal ICU Nurse takes efforts to work round-the-clock for newborn care and treatment to really appreciate God's creativity and really look upon miracles when you're able to save a critical newborn with stable condition.
