About Kurt Elkanich

I have been a member of Gray Fire Rescue for over twenty years and have been part of the transition from a Call Department to a Combination Department with ten full-time members and a small call membership. This transition has not been easy, but it has been vital for us to provide the quality of service our citizens deserve. Before being promoted to the position of Fire Chief in October 2015, I served as the Deputy Chief of Safety as a call member. While I was a call member, I worked for the Portland Police Department for thirteen years as a dispatcher. We dispatched for the Cities of Portland and South Portland as well as the town of Cape Elizabeth for Police, Fire, and EMS. Portland RCC is the busiest dispatch center in the State, and Portland is the largest city in the State. In addition to my duties as the Fire Chief, I am also the local emergency Management Director for Gray. I chair the Town of Gray Safety Committee as well as the Regionalization Working Group. I also serve on the board of directors for the Cumberland County Fire Chief's Association and Cumberland County Regional Communications. I also serve on the Fire Department Working Group and the Radio Committee for Cumberland County Regional Communications. I recently obtained my State of Maine certification to teach National Incident Command System classes and am also a CPR instructor.
