Background
About Kyle Carlos
Objective A recently licensed Registered Practical Nurse in search for a position that will offer many opportunities to learn and develop my nursing skills in a challenging environment and to be part of a dynamic organization/agency that strives to improve the quality of care they deliver to their clients. Education I spent the last two years studying practical nursing where I was placed in various clinical settings such as long term care, rehabilitation and orthopedics. I spent my consolidation at Providence Health Care with an excellent preceptor whom mentored and confided in me, to develop the nursing fundamental skills I possess to this day. Continuing Competence During my consolidation, I made a medication error where I inadvertently omitted a client's antibiotic for osteomyelitis. It was during my sixth shift of the week where I was responsible for preparing my client's 1700hr self-administrated medications for her outpatient dialysis appointment. As I scanned through the medication administration record, I prepared the medications I was familiar with and wrongfully assumed that no other medications were to be taken with her, when in fact, a new antibiotic had been transcribed. At my next shift, I checked the MAR and immediately realized my mistake. I nervously reported it to my preceptor and she comforted me by letting me know that mistakes do happen. As we filed an incident report, I was very emotional but I realize that the real harm was towards my client. I apologized and fortunately, she was forgiving. It is very important in nursing to make sure that every task is handled diligently especially giving medications. My priority as a nurse, is to be a patient’s advocate; the consequences of my actions affect the clients I take care of. Nothing is accomplished by blaming the cause of the issue but we can learn from the error and find ways to avoid making the same error in the future by discussing possible solutions.
