About Kyle Gillespie

I apply population modeling and fisheries science to assess and support management of pelagic species in the Atlantic. I collaborate with universities, industry, and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to research, set conservation goals, and recommend sustainable harvest rates for fished and bycaught species. I primarily focus on billfish, bluefin tuna, and data-poor pelagic species. I oversee Canada's Billfish Program, Chair ICCAT's North Atlantic Swordfish Species Group and oversee the ICCAT Atlantic and Mediterranean Swordfish Biology Programme, and I collaborate with others on data-limited assessment methods. This work requires a diversity of approaches, including satellite tagging studies, ageing, genetics, historical ecology, otolith microchemistry, reproductive biology, and population and ecosystem modeling to understand, conserve and maximize productivity of Atlantic pelagics. I am heavily involved in management strategy evaluation processes for swordfish and bluefin tuna and I am on the core stock assessment modeling teams for swordfish and bluefin tuna. I am the Canadian representative to ICCAT's Working Group on Stock Assessment Methods. Always keen for new collaborations.
