When I was in high school, I believed a career was simply a job that provided the things in life you wanted—house, car, vacation, family pet. Following my proverbial bliss and seeking a fulfilling occupation seemed like something rich kids did to entertain themselves. Caught up in this flawed rationale, I spent some time in community college, jumped on the dot-com bandwagon for a while, and eventually ended up working as a personal trainer in a boutique style gym. Reading this, you’re probably thinking (as would I in your place), “This guy has no idea who he wants to be when he grows up.” But to the contrary, despite my best efforts to convince myself otherwise, I have always known who I wanted to be. A biologist. After fifteen years in the workforce, the birth of my first child, and watching the Deepwater Horizon spew oil for 87 days, I finally decided it was time to put aside my doubts and insecurities and follow my deepest career aspiration. Bolstered by my patient wife, family, and friends I enrolled in college and began my journey to earn a bachelors degree in environmental science and management. The foundation of knowledge and experience I developed during my years in college prepared me to effectively and enthusiastically work in environmental conservation, restoration, communication, and research. Moreover, my education has inspired me to seek further growth as a biologist who, I hope, will play some role in preserving our vital natural resources for future generations.
