About Kyle Sandahl

How I ended up in GIS: I began my career in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. After several years, I felt it was time for a change and enrolled in the Geoscience Technology program at SAIT, specializing in geology and geophysics with a focus on the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. During this program, I took an introductory GIS course that introduced me to the fundamentals of ArcMap. It was in that class that I first recognized the immense potential of GIS across a wide range of industries. Unfortunately, I graduated just as the downturn in the oil and gas sector began, leading to limited job opportunities. As a result, I returned to the construction industry. However, my interest in GIS remained strong. One day, while browsing the Esri Canada website, I was struck by the breadth of industries utilizing GIS. Motivated by this discovery, I returned to SAIT to pursue further education in Geographic Information Systems. My timing, once again, was less than ideal, as I completed my program at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This led me back to construction temporarily. In 2021, a position as an Inside Sales Representative became available at Esri Canada. I seized the opportunity, applied, and was fortunate to be offered the role. In February of 2025 I transitioned into a role as an Account Manager. I have been proudly employed at Esri Canada, helping clients understand and leverage the value GIS brings to their organizations.
