About Kyle Spencer

I am a data scientist and bioinformatician who specializes in multi-omics analysis and integration as well as machine learning. My work revolves around the interactions between the metabolome and bacteriome and how these interactions are implicated in human physiology. With microbial cells residing in the human body comparable to the number of human cells, I firmly believe that we can gain a greater understanding of human biology, behavior, and disease by studying how microbes interact with the human body. I developed a deep love for science, particularly biology and chemistry, at a very young age. This love of science led me to Central Michigan University where under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Juris I studied the biochemical nature of Vibrio cholerae toxin dynamics which I worked on throughout my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Once I began my doctoral degree at The Ohio State University, I found a way to merge my love of biology with my love of computers. Under the mentorship of Dr. Ewy Mathé and Dr. Michael Bailey I began studying how bacterial metabolites were implicated in different human ailments, mainly focusing on inflammatory digestive disorders such as colorectal cancer (CRC) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).
