Background

About Kyle Swade

I am currently an ORISE Microbiology Fellow through ORAU at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I am researching with the Built Environment Ecology and Advanced Technologies (BEEATs) team in the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP) of the Clinical and Environmental Microbiology Branch (CEMB). My research pertains to validating detection methods of bacterial pathogens that cause healthcare-associated infections, including Mycobacterium abscessus. I received my Master of Science in Integrative Biology degree from Kennesaw State University. As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I conducted mosquito field work and laboratory research, mentored undergraduate laboratory students, and taught two sections of Introduction to Biology I Laboratory per semester for four semesters. As an ophthalmic assistant intern at Athens Retina Center, I served patients suffering from retinal issues by performing preliminary eye exams, gathering medical history and medication use, and relaying information to the ophthalmologists and certified ophthalmic assistants. While studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia, I completed undergraduate research in the Vogel Entomology Lab. My contributions led to the publication of "RNAi-mediated knockdown of two orphan G protein-coupled receptors reduced fecundity in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti" in Frontiers in Insect Science in August, 2023, and "The Peptide Hormone CNMa Influences Egg Production in the Mosquito Aedes aegypti" in Insects in February, 2022.
