Background
About Kylie Towery
I am a senior undergraduate student at Clemson University, pursuing a degree in genetics with minors in psychology and biochemistry, and working toward a career in genetic counseling. I am passionate about combining genetics, education, and advocacy to support individuals and families as they navigate complex health information. During my time at Clemson, I have been actively involved in service, research, and leadership. Through ClemsonLIFE's Volunteers4LIFE club, I have participated in Cooking Club, Traditional Course Volunteers, and Mentoring experiences. These have all strengthened my ability to build meaningful relationships and support individuals with diverse needs. I also volunteered with CU-REACH, tutoring children to improve literacy and reading comprehension levels in Oconee County. Throughout my junior and senior years, I had the honor of conducting research under Dr. Haiying Liang, where I studied adventitious root formation in the American Chestnut and Yellow Camillia plants. This work has strengthened my critical thinking skills and deepened my interest in genetic research. In addition, I have held several leadership roles within my sorority, Kappa Delta, where I have developed strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills. Outside of campus, I volunteer with the Child Life Department at Prisma Health Children's Hospital, where I work with families and advocate for patients' needs within a broader healthcare team. I also have served as an online crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line for the past two years. In this role, I provide support to individuals who are experiencing a wide variety of difficult moments. I am drawn to genetic counseling, as the field will allow me to support others, advocate for healthcare access, and empower patients through education that leads to a better understanding of genetic information. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs to pursue a master's degree in genetic counseling. I am currently interested in working in a clinical pediatric setting, while staying open to exploring the many paths within the field.I am eager to continue learning and connecting with others who are passionate about compassionate and accessible healthcare. I am excited for the next steps! Go Tigers!
