About Lacey Sloan

As a professor at Auburn University, I currently work to create a new MSW program that is trauma-responsive and social justice focused. I also teach and engage in research on critical multiculturalism, sexual rights, environmental justice and social work education and practice in Islamic countries. I have a PhD in Social Work from The University of Texas at Austin and 30 years of experience as a social work educator and researcher. My most recent research was identifying indigenous practices that have sustained the unique biodiversity of Socotra, Yemen. One of my passions is to develop and implement social work education programs that are responsive to local contexts and Indigenous knowledge, and that prepare social workers to address complex social and environmental challenges. I have facilitated the development, implementation, and/or initial accreditation of 11 new social work education programs in the USA (3 degrees), Qatar (1 degree), United Arab Emirates (2 degrees), Somalia (3 degrees for 5 universities), and South Sudan (1 degree). I work as a consultant for UNICEF-South Sudan to create social work education programs that meet child protection workforce needs. In addition, I have published several articles on social work education, environmental justice, and violence against marginalized populations.
