About Lachlan Barnes

I am a software engineer with a passion for solving hard problems. My expertise is in robotics, machine learning, and biomedical research. I work as a Software Engineer at Crown Robotics Technology Center, where I am part of the Navigation and Perception Team. In addition to my professional role, I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Health Science at the University of Auckland and a named investigator on a grant from the Office of Naval Research of the US Navy. My research is at the interface of dive medicine and engineering; using machine learning to further understanding of oxygen toxicity. This research builds upon techniques developed from my previous research into detecting sleep apnea from single-channel electroencephalography recordings. I hold a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree and a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng Hons) degree, both from the University of Auckland, and completed with first-class honors. My master's research was completed in collaboration with Crown Robotics Technology Center and focused on improving autonomous pallet engagement. I have strong command of modern C++, Python, Bash, ROS, Linux, Git, Jira, CI/CD, Keras, and, Tensorflow. Outside of work, I have a keen interest in scuba diving, spearfishing, horse riding, and tramping. I have worked as a Horse Wrangler in several film productions, including "The Rings of Power"(2022) and "The Luminaries"(2020).
