Background

About Laminn McLay

My background is a researcher in the Computational Engineering and Design Group in Aerospace Engineering (MEng). My research required extracting relevant information, mathematical modelling and simulation, data analysis and visualisation, and developing creative processes to solve my strategy. My background taught me skills such as analytical and critical thinking in an independent setting, whilst managing my time and tasks effectively, delivering good research (oral and written reports) and being open to adopting new approaches to solve challenges. My research also taught me the importance of good software practices such as regularly using GitLab, virtual environment and regular code reviews. I am a fast learner and can adapt to situations quickly. I completed two internships in engineering and finance respectively during my undergraduate studies, further broadening my professional knowledge and skills in both industries. I have experiences on a teaching role such as demonstrator for the undergraduate students and a Maths Tutor role for key stage 3 students. I have knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (Ansys and SolidWorks), Excel, MATLAB, LaTeX, Avizo, Arduino and Raspberry Pi as well as confidence in practical applications such as using tools and machines for manufacturing. Being part of air cadets during high school and as an RAF reserve at university has allowed me to gain leadership and fellowship roles as well as self-discipline. This has been reflected in Part 2 of my university undergraduate degree, where I lead a team in a group design project and a management project, in which we achieved an overall first. My experiences help combine academic and practical skills essential to becoming an engineering professional and have developed a range of technical skills and a practical perspective whilst developing soft skills such as confidence, communication and adaptability in unfamiliar situations.
