Background

About Lance Gao

With nearly two decades of experience in spacecraft systems engineering, I specialize in reentry and ocean recovery operations for crewed and uncrewed missions. My work bridges complex system architecture, telemetry relay, and real-time recovery coordination—ensuring spacecraft, crew, and infrastructure operate in seamless harmony across high-stakes missions. At the heart of my career is a passion for solving mission-critical challenges at the intersection of hardware design, dynamic simulation, and operational execution. From building real-time recovery state machines and telemetry systems to leading integrated testing with NASA and commercial partners, I bring both technical depth and systems-level thinking to every mission. I've played a key role in developing recovery architectures for missions like Demo-2, Crew-7, Ax-2, and Inspiration4—advancing standards in parachute separation, floating stability, and cross-vessel communication during high-risk operations. Whether architecting recovery simulations or refining ground interface protocols, I focus on delivering resilient systems built to perform under pressure.
