About Larry Ellsworth

Larry Ellsworth is a litigation partner at Jenner & Block, with more than 20 years of regulatory experience. He defends some of the largest companies in the United States in securities and FCPA investigations, as well as in private class actions and derivative actions. He also represents officers of large companies and advises Boards and audit committees on internal investigations. For example, he represented General Motors Corporation and a number of its officers in a lengthy SEC investigation involving complex financial accounting issues, which was successfully settled with no fraud charges or money payments and no individuals charged. Further, Mr. Ellsworth represents companies and institutional investors in affirmative actions to recoup losses. For example, he headed the derivatives team in a now settled $2 billion accounting malpractice suit against a Big 4 firm involving accounting for derivatives, mortgage-backed securities and other financial instruments. Similarly, he recouped over a hundred million dollars for clients with auction-rate securities claims against two major financial institutions. Prior to joining Jenner & Block, Mr. Ellsworth served as Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel for the SEC's Trial Unit. He received the Stanley Sporkin Award, the highest honor for enforcement efforts at the SEC, and recognition as one of the best trial counsels ever to represent the Commission. During his 12-year tenure at the SEC, Mr. Ellsworth never lost a case. Previously, he served as Vice President and Director of Litigation for a Fortune 50 Company and before that was a partner in two other DC law firms. Earlier, he was head of judicial litigation for the U.S. Department of Energy, where he won a $2 billion judgment against the Exxon Corporation, which was then (and may still be) the largest litigated judgment ever won by the United States.
