Obermeyer has an extensive background in higher education, nonprofit leadership, planning, and marketing. He holds a master’s degree in public administration with a concentration in public management and marketing from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a bachelor’s degree in marketing management from Bellevue (Neb.) University. Obermeyer’s career spans nearly 25 years in resource development for higher education, cultural organizations, and other community projects; responsible for generating over $250 million from grant awards, direct mail annual campaigns, and marketing campaigns. Aligned with his grant writing work, he has conducted economic impact studies for several cultural organizations. Prior to his work in resource development, Obermeyer had a successful career serving in senior store management roles in the retail grocery business. In addition to his professional work, Obermeyer serves as a railroad historian and historical researcher. His research interests include North American railroad history relating to the Agricultural Belt States of the Midwest and Upper Great Plains regions. Part of his research work concentrates on the history of the Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District in Sioux City. His research has appeared in several peer-reviewed nominations to list former railroad properties on the National Register of Historic Places. His lifelong work has been the preservation and transformation of the former Milwaukee Railroad Shops into a regional railroad museum to advance the industrial heritage and knowledge of railroads.
