About Larry Stapleton

Dr. Stapleton is an internationally recognised expert on the business opportunities and the organisational and management challenges associated with digital technology-driven transformation. He is excited by the paradigm shifts of the digital age, and has deep insights into the increased complexity resulting from digital systems and the ways these complexities load risk. His main research interest is the potential of smart data systems and intelligent human-machine systems to liberate performance in organisations. He has advised national governments, the European Commission, regulators, universities, private firms, trade unions and other NGOs. He is also passionate about international development with 17 years professional experience working in the developing world where he has led strategic, internationally-funded initiatives to build and inspire positive change. At Waterford Institute of Technology he is Director of the INSYTE Centre in the School of Science and Computing which investigates ways digital systems can add value in a socially-responsible way, 2020 saw the launch of the new INSYTE-Cooley Laboratory, named after the late-Professor Mike Cooley, and world-renowned expert in human-centred systems design. Key technologies at the lab include linked-data systems, new data standards, ontology engineering and knowledge management systems with a particular focus on complex, poorly structured data sets. Key methods include socially-responsible human-centred systems methodologies for smart systems deployment in knowledge-based work environments. As a senior academic he has held many professorial positions, including visiting professorships for which he has won several awards. He currently holds professor positions and other faculty positions at the Technical University of Vienna and the Institute of Banking, University College Dublin. He has won the best international lecturer award at the Technical University of Vienna five times. He has over 140 academic publications based upon work with hundreds of organisations, has edited 3 books and numerous book chapters, and has contributed dozens of government, regulator and EU reports and white papers. He was winner of the 2020 International Federation of Automation and Control "Outstanding Achievement Award" at the World Congress in Berlin. Dr. Stapleton is married to Margery and has 3 children.
