Background

About Lars Stenger

I have 17 years of experience in Guatemala, UK and Indonesia, working on policy-reform, research, program design and implementation (MEAL), organizational and strategy development, and representation. My areas of expertise are international development, forced migration issues, humanitarian responds, refugee advocacy, human rights and reconciliation. Previously I was the National Information Advocacy Officer for Jesuit Refugee Service Indonesia. I managed JRS knowledge database, communications, represented JRS in national, regional and international forums, led innovation and accountability initiatives in program, organizational and network development. I held various roles in the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network (APRRN) since its establishment in 2008 and participated in the Asia Dialogue on Forced Migration (ADFM). In the past I was the Indonesia focal point for the International Detention Coalition, International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munitions Campaign. My background also includes protection of human rights defenders, monitoring places of detention and documentation. Having lived half of my adult life in Indonesia, I am a close observer of Indonesian politics and society, as well as Southeast Asia more broadly. My current work and research interests focus on refugee research and advocacy, innovative and accountable programming, inclusion and realization of refugee protection via GCR, GCM and SDGs. I am an alumnus of ‘Forced Migration Studies’ Refugee Studies Center, Oxford Department of International Development at the University of Oxford and hold a Masters in Sociology from the University of Leipzig, where I also studied International, European and Constitutional Law.
