About Lassi Rieppo

I'm a specialist in artificial intelligence and biomedical data science with over a decade of experience across academia, industry, and public health. My work has focused on applying machine learning and data-driven methods to complex biomedical challenges — from infrared spectroscopic imaging and tissue analysis to algorithm development for wearable devices. Currently, I work at the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea), where I focus on the regulatory oversight of AI-based medical technologies. I help ensure that AI systems used in healthcare comply with EU and national regulations, including the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), and the upcoming AI Act. I collaborate with both public institutions and private companies to support safe, effective, and compliant innovation in health tech. Previously, I worked as an AI expert at Polar Electro, where I contributed to the development of algorithms for wearable health and fitness devices. Earlier, in academic roles at the University of Oulu and University of Eastern Finland, my research focused on medical imaging, tissue spectroscopy, and biomedical machine learning. I hold a Ph.D. in Medical Physics and serve as an Adjunct Professor in Biomedical Physics. I’m passionate about the responsible integration of AI in healthcare — combining scientific, technical, and regulatory perspectives to support meaningful innovation.
