Background
About Latonya Stemley
I am a Science Professional that's equally passionate about Research and Education. My most recent position allowed me to tap into both of my passions simultaneously. I was able to maintain media and reagents as needed for daily microbiological testing and analysis while teaching students proper aseptic laboratory techniques. I've conducted small animal surgery and dissections (swine). I prepared samples and testing for indicator organisms and pathogens. My purpose is to contribute to the betterment of Sciences through research and education. I received a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Southern University at New Orleans. Upon graduation, I worked as an instructor for a local college in New Orleans that allowed me to educate other individuals in various areas of science. This position developed me as an advisor and mentor to the students I encountered. As a leader to individuals of multiple cultures, personalities, and ethnicities, I encouraged team building, critical and strategic thinking as well as a healthy learning environment. I am a problem solver and a people’s person. Undergraduate molded an individual of distinct character. I can speak amongst an audience with ease. I am a scientist by degree and experience thanks to the FaST team. We researched the ecological effects of the Peconic River in New York in conjunction with Brookhaven National Lab (BNL). Our team collected water (my specialty) and sediments of the river, analyzed those samples, wrote a published article as well as presented the information during poster and oral presentations for the community, its leaders, and the scientists of BNL. I am passionate about science, research, and education. Finally, I completed the Master’s Program with Dowling College on Long Island New York in Environmental Microbiology. I have partaken in research at Dowling College which introduced me to various procedures such as plating (streak, dilution), staining, quantification (MPN, plate count) filtrations, cloning, electrophoresis, and dilutions to name a few scientific methods I am familiar with. I am purposefully looking for a Research or Scientist position. I am open to traveling for the position and possibly relocating if need be.
