About Laura Mitchell

Working with children has always been a passion of mine. Past employment and volunteer experiences with children include working at a daycare as a toddler room director for 2 ½ years, holding the position of kid’s church director at a local church for 3 years, providing in home childcare for more than 7 years, volunteering for Project MORE for 2 years to assist children with reading, volunteering to assess speech and language during kindergarten screenings for 3 years, and volunteering at a speech therapy camp for 1 week. In my undergraduate and graduate studies, I worked with two young children with articulation disorders in the university speech and hearing clinic. During an internship placement at a private practice and school, I worked with multiple children with different disorders and disabilities of varying severity levels. Through working with these children, I was able to gain knowledge and practice skills in the areas of collecting data, writing goals, assessing both articulation and language, developing therapy/session plans, writing ETRs and IEPs, and participating in team meetings. In addition to interactions with children on a professional level, I have also had the pleasure of watching my own two children grow and go through the various stages of development (from infancy to adolescence, to emerging adulthood). Although all children are unique and have their own skills and talents to offer; having children of my own has offered me a unique perspective and outlook into what nurturing and dedication can do for a child’s personal and developmental growth. My personal objective is to obtain a full time clinical fellowship position in the field of Speech Language Pathology. I am seeking a position within a facility that encourages hard work, passion for communication, mentorship, continued learning opportunities, and both personal and clinical growth.
