About Laura Murphy

I am fun-loving, motivated, self-driven and and always looking for ways to further my professional and interpersonal skills. I am a helper by nature. Because of my unique and strong sense of empathy for others, my main goal in life is to use my professional skills and personal passion to help those in need in any way I can. I chose a career in law because I am passionate about the law, and I feel called to being part of a solution to the access to justice issues that run deep within the Canadian justice system. I believe providing accessible and affordable legal services to those who are disadvantaged is one of many ways I can use my career to advance access to justice. I believe in a trauma-informed approach to law. As legal professionals, we often come across clients who are experiencing a traumatic time in their lives. In order to serve clients in the most compassionate manner, the five principles of trauma-informed care (safety, trustworthiness & transparency, peer support, collaboration & mutability, empowerment & choice) must be incorporated into our practice of law. I have almost a decade of client service experience, and because of this I possess great client communication and de-escalation skills. My greatest strength is my ability to empathize with and understand clients, even in the toughest situations, to find a solution that meets their needs. From my time in management positions I have learned how to lead teams of various sizes, how to communicate as a leader and how to delegate effectively. I am a problem solver and I love to think outside of the box to find the best solutions to even the hardest situations. There is no challenge that is too daunting as I love the feeling of overcoming the toughest obstacles. In my personal time I enjoy to paint using the mediums acrylic and watercolour. I also enjoy personal fitness and spending time outdoors going on hikes or swimming at the beach. I believe that in order to maintain passion and professional stamina, our lives as legal professionals must be balanced with activities that sooth the soul and foster creativity.
