About Laura Oconnell

I am a full-time lecturer at Munster Technological University (MTU), where I endulge my passion for microbiology, biotechnology, and teaching. My previous research has involved the novel classification, characterisation, and applications of mycobacteriophages, which are viruses that target mycobacteria. I have also have previous experience with the phenomenon of natural transformation in Gram-positive bacteria, which has implications for food fermentations and starter cultures. Additionally, I am very interested in science communication and dissemination of research to both specialist and nonspecialist audiences. I have participated in various scientific outreach programs, such as Open Doors, SUREbyts, and Cell Explorers, where I have provided tours of lab spaces, created video content, and introduced concepts of cellular biology to primary school children. Through these activities, I aim to inspire curiosity, engagement, and appreciation for science and its applications.
