About Laura Shipman

Laura Shipman is an urban designer and planner with experience working in communities throughout the the country. She currently serves as an urban planner with the National Capital Planning Commission, the federal government’s central planning agency for the National Capital Region. Prior to joining NCPC, Laura was the Director of Community Development and Planning with One Treasure Island, a nonprofit organization in San Francisco committed to fostering a vibrant, inclusive community on Treasure Island that provides pathways for economic advancement for lower-income San Franciscans. She developed a wide range of plans and design guidelines as a Planner Coordinator and urban designer with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, and as an urban designer and planner with the Berkeley California planning firm MIG. She began her career in participatory design as a Design Corps Fellow, and also served as an Enterprise Community Partners Rose Fellow in San Francisco developing permanent supportive housing. Laura has served on several non-profit and public boards, including America Walks, Design Corps, the Association for Community Design, and the Treasure Island/Yerba Buena Island Citizens Advisory Board. She holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design with Distinction from Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell University School of Architecture, Art and Planning.
