In my professional and volunteer life, I promote responsible landscape techniques to enhance the restoration of disturbed landscapes to return them to natural and beautiful states that will benefit the human soul and the wildlife needing them to survive. We can never go back to the pristine wild of yesteryear, but we can invite nature back to our personal space. Just the simple act of planting one milkweed in every yard from here to Mexico will help our Monarch butterflies to survive. Adding native plants to our yards can help sustain the insects birds need to feed their young. Installing one rain barrel will keep 50 more gallons out of the stormwater system and onsite to use; emptying that barrel is essential for collection during the next rain even and the next 50 gallons. Think about if every house had a rain barrel. Simple acts multiplied can make a difference. One landscape at a time; one action at a time. Removing invasive plants and replacing them with site appropriate plants is essential.
