Background
About Laure Marignol
I am a Radiation Biologist whose work focuses on understanding and overcoming the biological barriers to effective radiation therapy. For over two decades, my research has spanned tumor hypoxia, molecular drivers of radioresistance, and the integration of imaging and radiomics into personalized cancer care—resulting in a body of work that bridges fundamental radiobiology, translational models, and patient-centered approaches. A core thread in my recent research is advancing sex as a biological variable (SABV) in oncology. My publications—including analyses of sex inclusivity in bladder, kidney, and radiation oncology research—demonstrate that despite claims of inclusivity, sex-specific differences remain underexplored, and clinical practice often defaults to male-centered models. Addressing these gaps is central to my mission of building more equitable and effective cancer treatments. Cancer patients may never meet me, but I take joy in training Radiation Oncology professionals and collaborating to solve the challenges of delivering the best treatment for every patient. Fairness, curiosity, and persistence guide my work and leadership, values recognized by my students and colleagues. Today, I am turning toward the molecular foundation common to us all—DNA—by exploring new ways to generate double-strand breaks and dismantle cancer cells’ survival instructions. In parallel, I aim to leverage my expertise to develop the next generation of computational, experimental, and clinical tools that embed sex as a fundamental biological and clinical variable in oncology research. These tools will not only generate new biological insights, but also inform the design of sex-sensitive clinical trials, refine predictive models, and guide the development of practice-changing clinical standards. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had, and excited to see where these next steps will lead
