About Lauri Virtanen

Ever since I started my psychiatric nursing studies, I've been interested in ECT and other neuromodulation treatments. When I heard in 2017 that Turku university hospital was planning to establish a psychiatric neuromodulation unit, where all the neuromodulation treatments of the region were going to be centered, I knew I had to jump in. And right away I was hooked. Our ward was established on principle that all our treatments should be performed and assessed by registered nurses and hence ford I was privileged to start my studies on neuromodulation treatments. Currently we provide rTMS, tDCS, Ketamine infusions and ECT. Last of which was previously considered to be performed only by specialized psychiatrists. Tasks transferred from doctors later became one of my main interests.I love my job and it really shows. Whether it’s performing treatments, discussing with patients or training colleagues, I do it passionately and from all my heart. Trust me, you'd know if you'd met me. My plan is to be able to share my knowledge of neuromodulation treatments and to be able to improve the quality of neuromodulation treatments provided in a national level. To achieve that I'm also working on the field of research in my spare time.
