About Lawrence Barat

Dr. Lawrence Barat joined PSI and the PMI Impact Malaria Project team as Technical Director/Senior Technical Advisor in November 2019. He brings to Impact Malaria and PSI more than 25 years of experience in malaria control and elimination, with particular expertise in malaria case management and elimination programming. Dr. Barat’s career on malaria control and elimination began in 1995 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he focused his work on antimalarial drug resistance and improving the quality of diagnostic testing for malaria. He subsequently led the World Bank’s Malaria Team from during which time he served a Founding Member on the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Global Partnership Board and supported malaria activities in countries as diverse as India, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Eritrea. During his tenure at the Bank, he led initiatives to assess the equitable distribution of malaria services and supported efforts to improve malaria case management in the private sector. In subsequent work at the Academy for Educational Development, Dr. Barat provided technical guidance on the USAID NetMark project, USAID first large-scale effort to scale-up insecticide-treated bed nets, and the USAID BASICS II Project, where he served as Senior Malaria Advisor. From 2007-2019, he served as Senior Technical Advisor with the US President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), including as the Technical Lead for PMI for more than five years. In his various roles at PMI, Dr. Barat provided technical leadership on the initiative’s efforts to reduce malaria burden in 27 targeted countries in Africa and the Greater Mekong Subregion, including leading the development of the PMI Strategy 2015-2020 and spearheading the development of PMI’s technical guidance. Since 2018, Dr. Barat also has served as Co-Chair of the RBM Case Management Working Group, which has worked to disseminate best practices on malaria case management.
