Background
About Lay Khoon Too
Lay Khoon is a biomedical scientist at the Save Sight Institute (University of Sydney). Her research experience is multidisciplinary and primarily focuses on vision science, behavioral neurosciences, and neuropathology. Her major research interest lies in exploring the pathogenesis of and restorative approaches to neurodegenerative diseases and neurological disorders. Her current research focuses on investigating gene- and cell-based approaches to restore vision loss caused by retinal and macular diseases. Specifically, her research looks into the sight-saving effects of optogenetic gene constructs when they are delivered into the eyes. The investigation of the therapeutic potential of retinal progenitor cells is also underway. Besides using murine models of retinal degeneration in her studies, she conducts her experiments on human retinal explants collected from living or deceased donors to aid the translation of preclinical outcomes into clinical applications.
