About Layla Ghazi

I am extremely passionate about effective teaching practices in the earth sciences, especially curriculum development, student focused learning, and critical teaching theory. I am interested in research topics related to the biogeochemical cycling of major and trace elements, organic geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, chemical weathering, organic matter-mineral interactions, earth-surface geochemistry, and the oxygenation of the Earth. I received my PhD from Oregon State University in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences in Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences with a concentration in Ocean Ecology and Biogeochemistry under the advisement of Dr. Julie Pett-Ridge. My dissertation focused on determining rates and mechanisms of geologic respiration in watersheds on the West Coast of the United States (NSF Award #: Although I spend a large portion of my time behind the walls of a secret laboratory, much like the famous Dexter, I am a very sociable and personable individual. I love to laugh; I love making new professional relationships; and I love getting to know more about the people I am working with!
