Background
About Leah Bloom
Along with my business partner/husband Ben, I have been the owner of Homewatch CareGivers in Oakland, California since 2016. We are an agency that employs caregivers to help elders live independently. My role is primarily marketing & supporting clients and their families. Our business is run on the philosophy that, when people feel seen and heard, they are more likely to engage in their own care. I am committed to bringing out the best in people, especially people who are misunderstood. For example, in my daily work, I frequently spend time with people living with dementia and other progressive diseases. This population often experiences fear and isolation. I see it as one of untapped profound wisdom and depth. Like a lifeless plant that has gone without water, I have seen time and again, my clients prosper with love and attention. I grew up in San Diego where my family has been in the scrap metal business for three generations. I earned my BA concentrating in Domestic Violence and Jewish Studies at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. I am a Certified Domestic Violence Counselor. In 2002, I moved to Oakland, CA to work at Shalom Bayit where I created Love Shouldn’t Hurt, a teen dating violence program which continues to serve the Jewish community. I have also worked at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco and the Magnes Museum in Berkeley, restoring and teaching about historical documents related to Jewish Bay Area history. Later, I worked for The Jewish Federation in their Young Leadership Division as a fundraiser and community organizer. I am passionate about helping organizations and communities I care about grow and prosper. I have been selected as a national Hadassah Evolve Leadership Fellow and currently sit on the board of my local Hadassah Chapter, Kesher Oak, in the Philanthropy and Programming positions. In my free-time, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, dancing, and restoring our 1920s home in Oakland, CA.
