About Leanne Joe

Ey swayel (Good day) I achieved a Bachelor of General Studies with a Global Indigenous Geography theme at UFV with a minor in geography, a major in Halq’emeylem language; and a certificate in Indigenous Maps, Films, Rights and Land Claims. I was the recipient of the Lieutenant Governors Award for Indigenous Inclusivity. I have over 15 years of experience working mainly within administrative duties, public and private education, and customer/client relations. I also have some experience working outdoors. While in administrative positions, I’ve actively participated in community planning projects and policy development. I have passion for the process of planning and implementation of indigenization - spreading awareness of Indigenous cultures - at a continental level. While I recognize that this will be a long process, I am committed to developing ways to encourage everyone to accept and appreciate Indigenous culture and languages. I have also recently discovered that my passion for cultural knowledge is extended to cultures from around the world. This also fits well with my recent discovery of a new passion for geography. My vision for myself is to approach indigenization from early childhood education, in elementary, high schools, and into adult education by supporting and teaching language and culture through as many subjects possible.
