About Lee Helbert

I have spent all of my employment years in higher education. I started as a faculty member at Arkansas State University in their developmental education program. I then moved back to the Chicago area and switched to an administrative position in Institutional Research. My position changed to include the directorship of the Student Success Center (tutoring, make-up testing and computer lab) as well as Institutional Research. When PSC hired a full-time Institutional Research Director, I oversaw just the Student Success Center. In 2012, when higher administration decided to make a few changes in the Student Success Center organization (to include Intentional Advising and placement testing), I was made the Director of Testing Services and an Intentional Advisor. I was the Manager of the First Year Experience, under a director for five years, and while still Manager in title, was the head of the department for three. I have worked as an Adjunct in several different schools. I have taught College Success Seminars, English Composition I and II, Developmental English and Developmental Reading. I have team-taught PSC's highest level of developmental English which is combined with developmental Reading. I graduated with my Ed.D. in Higher Education with a Community College emphasis from Northern Illinois University in May 2021. My dissertation: What does the staff say: Front-line staff perceptions of their role in student success, was successfully defended in late 2020. Currently, I have come full circle, and will again work in tutoring and testing as the Director of the Student Success Center. I love the community college setting - I enjoy being in an environment that is student-friendly and student-centered. I also prefer the teaching focus of the community college, rather than the research focus of the 4 year college and universities.
