About Leia Eller

Teaching at its best is exciting for both student and instructor. I have never felt happier or more alive than after a tutoring session or class that has gone well, with eager student participation. Better yet is the feeling I get when a student tells me that they’ve received a good grade, a scholarship, or entrance to their institution of choice based partially on something we’ve worked on together. For me there is no bigger high than helping my students to see themselves as intelligent, productive, capable individuals able to enact positive change on their environments through their learning. In order to solicit the best work from their students, it is imperative that instructors remember that students are human beings first. As such, each individual student will bring their own unique strengths and weaknesses to the class. Because of this reality, one of the most important factors in teaching well is the ability to use positive teacher talk with students. Honestly showing students that you care for their welfare outside of your class and making sure to compliment their positive work while in your class is a must. My long-term teaching goal is to fan that spark of self-esteem into a hungry flame which inspires my students to want to learn more. I hope that each of my students is inspired by my class or session and is interested in learning more not just within the confines of the classroom, but within the world as a whole. My great goal then, is to embed a lifetime love of learning and encourage my students to further their educations as far as they want to take it, whether to a 2-year community college, a 4-year university with a Bachelor’s degree, or higher level graduate work.
