About Leif Sjoquist

A Michigan native, I spent my early years working in custom manufacturing as a knife maker. I worked with some of the finest knife makers in the world, and learned their trade quickly to become one myself. It was here I got my first experience with the manufacturing process and related machinery. After several years of extremely rewarding work, I decided I wanted to something more. Along with a fellow knife maker, I enlisted in the United States Navy. After basic training, I was sent to learn Nuclear Reactor and Propulsion school, where I stayed for 7 months. I then attended Naval Diesel Engineman School before headed off to my first duty station as a diesel engineer. I was a member of the Pre-commissioning crew of USS John P Murtha. As an engineer, I helped oversee the final completion of the vessel, preparing it for sea service. While there I quickly was promoted and placed in a leadership position within the engine room. I oversaw the operation of 2 main propulsion diesel engines and their support equipment as well as our water purification plant. In the following year, I was awarded the United States Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for my work in preparing the ship for service. I quickly was promoted again and was made work center supervisor of the engine room. This management position made me responsible over all my equipment, preventative and corrective maintenance for that equipment, and approximately 20 personnel. I prided myself in running an efficient and safe work center. Now, my time in the navy is over. I now look forward to returning to the civilian world and continuing to serve by utilizing my skills and years of experience to excel in the world.
