Background
About Leo Flanagan
As a psychologist for 40+ years, I focus on three things: providing psychotherapy; executive coaching; and developing resilience. As a clinician, I’ve helped people heal in the aftermath of disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, cluster suicides, crimes, and mass shootings. In a community traumatized by a cluster suicide I co-led the response that brought healing to the families, friends, teachers and neighbors of those who died.Co-leading the development of a school for adolescents with emotional/behavioral problems was one of my earliest clinical experiences. That school now serves hundreds of adolescents and their families.Developing a crisis intervention program providing 24/7/365 services county-wide was incredibly fulfilling. We served all law enforcement, judicial, educational, and healthcare organizations. It diverted hundreds of people in crisis to community-based treatments/services avoiding institutionalization. As a faculty member at Cornell University I led executive development programs on campus and around the globe. Being on Cornell’s faculty led to my be a visiting lecturer at CalTech, MIT, Notre Dame, Penn State and other leading universities. I was selected as a faculty member and executive coach for The African American Leadership Institute at Carnegie Mellon, where I prepared high-potential African Americans for advancement. For five major corporations I provided executive coaching to the CEO and all direct reports. I am known for my ability to listen deeply and provide candid insights to help executives enhance their performance and leadership impact. Using various coaching frameworks and personal experiences encourages clients to think differently about challenges and opportunities. Together with my partner, Ken Lay, I developed a Replenishing Resilience program. Results include: 17% reduction in overall burnout12% decrease in emotional exhaustion24% decrease in cynicism 47% increase in employee engagementThree years after the program:66% still feel the benefit 76% still practice the behaviorsI divide my time between my clinical practice, executive coaching, and the Replenishing Resilience program.
