About Leonid Bovkun

Day 6277 since I presented my first research work in high school, it was about effective charges in molecules with covalent bonds. Since then my academic studies have been related to the physics of semiconductors, but I apply the scientific method to many aspects of my life. For my PhD, I was present both in France and Russia, where I learned how to operate complex instrumentation at low temperatures and high magnetic fields to study novel materials. For my two-times extended postdoc in Würzburg I successfully assembled a similar measurement setup to look into in-house materials but also attracted external collaborations. I like to work with complex challenges not only alone but in a diverse team of colleagues with unique backgrounds and expertise. My preferred method is a systematic approach with all kinds of data collection, sorting, and further analysis. This helps me not only at work, but I often bring a table to the supermarket to cover necessary positions, and of course, I have a list of items for every trip we did in the last four years. At work, I also enjoy expressing myself in public presentations to report on things I’ve done and it is an absolute delight for me if colleagues reuse some of my protocols or approaches. I am an outdoor addict and back in Russia I used to participate in and lead 15-day-long autonomous mountain hikes for groups of eight people. I managed to combine the knowledge of more experienced team members for the benefit of the whole campaign. In this role, I make use of my compassion and attention to detail, but some people find my sharp tongue offensive. I improved that and only have positive reviews from guests in Couchsurfing! I am looking for a new role in Germany with a low power distance in the team. My current motivators are curiosity, relatedness, and mastery.
