Developed new classification tools, successfully providing representative ecological assessment of deep waterbodies for the Water Framework Directive (WFD) see Ecological Indicators, 2010, 10, 594-601. Anticipated need for a new Standard Method complying with European legislation. Wrote ‘Guidance on sampling and processing of pupal exuviae of Chironomidae for ecological assessment’ approved by European Standards Committee August 2006 (CEN 15196). Now established WFD-compliant method used in several countries. Co-authored Freshwater Biological Association Guide to the Identification of chironomid pupal exuviae, enabling ecologists of UK competent authorities to implement WFD requirements. Awarded Churchill Travelling Fellowship to collaborate with US universities. Produced an unprecedented description of the effects of lead-mining on macroinvertebrate species along 260 km of the Arkansas River, see Western North American Naturalist 60, 34-56 and 57-65. Specialties: Experienced aquatic ecologist, tenaciously pursuing the application of science for improved monitoring of water quality. Self-driven to achieve results. Looks beyond assumptions, to improve our knowledge and effectiveness. Skilled at macroinvertebrate identification, particularly Chironomidae, multivariate statistical analysis, oral and written presentations.
