About Lessa Joana

Joana Lessa is an Assistant Professor /Senior Lecturer in the Communication, Art and Design Department of University of Algarve, Portugal, where she’s been teaching since She is responsible for several modules in BA [Hons] Communication Design (Graphic Design), BA [Hons] Animation and MA Communication Design for Culture and Tourism. Supervises Post-graduate Students, Design Projects and Internshipments. She holds a PhD in Design (Communication Design) by the University of Lisbon, with project funded by FCT, a Master degree in Multimedia Technology by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and a licentiate degree in Communication design (Graphic Design) by the Faculty of Fine-Arts of the University of Porto, where she graduated as top Faculty student of the year For this she was rewarded with the Eng.ª António de Almeida Prize. While undergraduate student, she soon established her design philosophy: human-centered design and a humanistic design philosophy; that design principles need to be driven from a deep understanding of humans and behaviours. Since then, she has been focusing on several issues: interpersonal communication; designing for inclusion; multimodal integration / multisensory perception / Gesamkunswerk; human emotions (expression, perception, theories & classification, history); communication mediation; incommunicability; the impact of technology on interpersonal communication; the importance of memory and identity; urban memory and identity / typographic landscape as heritage and identity. These subjects have been addressed in multidisciplinary research projects, many with multidisciplinary teams, presented and published. Currently under development, she is responsible for the UX, UI and Emotional Design of the project M5SAR Project - Mobile Five Senses Augmented Reality System For Museums, Portugal2020, CRESC Algarve2020 I & DT, nº 3322, promotor SPIC - Sonha Pensa Imagina Comunica, Lda, co-promotor UAlg (coordenador).
