Background
About Levi Burns
I am an oncology resident in Toronto, specializing in radiation treatments. My training is split predominantly between the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (UHN) and the Odette Cancer Centre (Sunnybrook). I originally trained as a medical physicist. When I pivoted from physics to machine learning in 2018, I was recognized by the Vector Institute as one of Ontario's top graduate students in the field. As an AI consultant, I worked on projects with several multidisciplinary groups, including building a natural language processing engine for a multinational bank, supporting litigation in forensic accounting, and developing software for organizations to measure (and rectify) pay equity gaps between women and men performing work of equal value. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I spearheaded the development and implementation of a tool to streamline and simplify the delivery of federal subsidies to struggling businesses. At the heart of my career has been a passion for teaching and learning. My teaching experience spans from middle school math to graduate-level physics, and everything in between, including freelance work with educational technology startups. In my academic path, I have been involved with the Queen's Faculty of Education, the UBC Center for Teaching and Learning, and the McMaster Education Research, Innovation, and Theory (MERIT) group. Most recently, I have worked with a team exploring the impact on ChatGPT on medical education. In research, I have published several peer-reviewed articles in areas including CT/MRI imaging, radiation oncology physics, medical education, and AI. As a radiation oncology resident, I will be returning to my roots in medical physics, and look forward to continuing work in these and other areas. Above all, I am thrilled to transition to clinical work, and am excited to focus on delivering outstanding care to patients living with cancer.
