About Liam Obrien

I am a Ph.D. candidate at Caltech, working on theoretical physics in Gil Refael's group. I have experience in designing and modeling qubits and gates in superconducting circuits, including developing novel codebases to simulate circuit dynamics and qubit control. I also have experience in quantum many-body physics, where I have developed and implemented novel algorithms for diagonalizing and studying many-body systems. Prior to Caltech, I studied four-band models of 2d circular topological insulators with Ilya Vekhter and Dan Sheehy as part of the NSF REU at Louisiana State University. There, we studied how the properties of the surface states varied with the radius. I have extensive experience and training in developing code to solve problems in quantum physics, including the use of high-performance computing resources (e.g. PBS, SLURM). I also have formal training in computer science from my undergraduate education, including the use of version control (e.g, Git), coding best practices, and machine learning.
