Background

About Lindsay Barney

It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.” – Dr. Seuss I have worked with the family unit for over 22 years as a Special Education teacher, church leader, mother, and mental health therapist. I believe that showing love, kindness, and acceptance are key elements to facilitating change – and it all starts in the home. I take a Positive Psychology approach by encouraging and teaching concepts of happiness, well-being, quality of life, and contentment. I encourage my clients to make themselves, their homes, and their communities a more meaningful place. Young Children and Parents I have a background in child development, social-emotional learning, and early intervention that helps me connect with growing families. I am trained as an Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant (ECMHC) working with children 0-5 years old and their primary caregivers; focusing on attachment, temperament, and stress reduction. Couples in Betrayal I am specially trained to work with couples who have experienced betrayal. Working individually with the betrayed partner, addressing false belief patterns, attachment wounds, and then implementing connection techniques to be applied at home. I am trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), with additional training from The Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS) to work with the partner and symptoms of Betrayal Trauma. Teens I piloted an ESSER funded program to have therapists on schools campuses at Red Mountain High School in Mesa. I work with teens helping build self-awareness and emotional regulation, practice mindfulness, and teaching communication and social skills. Trauma My master’s degree includes a concentration in the Treatment of Trauma, Abuse, and Deprivation (TAD). I address trauma as a whole system, using a Cognitive-Behavioral approach (CBT) that helps change occur through the use of awareness of cognitive responses, mindfulness, and implementing healthy coping skills; all this adds to directly helping with PTSD symptoms. Areas of Specialty: • Young Children 0-5 • Supporting IEP and 504 plans • Individual Counseling • EFT Couples Counseling • Working with Betrayed Partners • Parenting Groups and Workshops • Trauma Therapy I love the resilience, grit, and adaptability that children, couples, and families possess. I have a passion for building up and strengthening families and believe in the power of counseling to help heal things that feel bent or broken. I am a firm believer in the human spirit, and its ability to heal and strengthen through adversity.
